Vannmelon i ull laget i Betlehem hos Ma'an lil-Hayat. Vannmelonen er egentlig et bokmerke, men flere av oss bruker den ofte som en brosje ved hjelp av en sikkerhetsnål. Du kan også sy en tråd gjennom den og henge den opp. Ma'an lil-Hayat er et aktivitetssenter som fokuserer på å skape felleskap for mennesker med og uten utviklingshemning. De jobber særlig med tekstilkunst og kjøper den rå ullen fra kvinnelige gjetere i landsbyer i utkanten av Betlehem. His journalism is published by the BBC, Guardian, Independent, Times and Financial Times, among others. Teller is the author of Quite Alone: Journalism from the Middle East 2008–2019 and several travel guides, including the Rough Guide to Jordan. Juliette Touma is Director of Communications for UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, covering Palestine, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. She has extensive experience in crisis communications and emergency response, and has served as Head of Communications at the UN Development Programme in Baghdad, Chief Spokesperson to the UN Special Envoy for Syria and Regional Chief of Advocacy and Communications for the Middle East and North Africa at UNICEF. Touma travels frequently to Gaza from UNRWA’s headquarters in Amman, Jordan. Jayyab Abusafia is a London-based journalist from Jabalia refugee camp in the north of Gaza. He was formerly Sky News Arabia’s senior reporter in London and a senior news presenter at Alghad TV. In Gaza, Abusafia worked as a radio presenter and a fixer/producer for global media including BBC, Channel 4 UK, Radio Canada and the Chicago Tribune.   A pillar of Palestinian literature, "Men in the Sun" is a novella originally published in Arabic in 1962. It follows three Palestinian men, Abu Qais, Assad, and Marwan, as they try to cross the border to Kuwait in an attempt to better provide for their families. In the space of about 70 pages, Kanafani creates very strong and memorable characters whose struggles felt very palpable. The collection also contains five others short stories, "The Land of Sad Oranges" (1958), "If You Were a Horse..."(1961), "A Hand in the Grave" (1962), "The Falcon" (1961), "Letter from Gaza" (1956), and an excerpt from one of his later novels "Umm Saad" (1969). While much shorter in length than "Men in the Sun", all stories are very good at illustrating the plight of their characters. The collection is prefaced by a very informative introduction written by the translator, that sheds light on Kanafani's symbolism from his stories, as well as his political activism and how it translates to his literary works. The three Palestinian men embark on a brutal and treacherous odyssey across the Iraqi desert to Kuwait, not for liberation but material betterment. Under the indifferent brutality of border bureaucracy and the blank aggression of the sun, things grow increasingly oppressive. Breezily conversational and disarmingly lyrical, this short novel delivers a shuddering dose of horror. Collected here alongside the titular novella are six short stories, including the timeless, resonant ‘Letter from Gaza’, Kanafani’s first published work.
