"Life under Occupation" is the adaptation of a real journey made by José Pablo García to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, in collaboration with Action Against Hunger and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). Due to the many delicate situations they had to deal with, this ten-day trip from Nablus to Gaza is a graphic novel full of emotions and feelings.

Writing about Palestine and the Palestinians continues to be controversial. Until the late 1980s, the question of Palestine was approached through Western social theories that had appeared after World War 2. This endowed European settlers and colonists the mission of guiding the "backward" natives of Palestine to modernity. However, since the work of Palestinian scholar Elia Zureik, the study of Israel, the Arab countries and the "ethnic relations" in Palestine-Israel has been radically shifted. Building on Zureik’s work, this book studies the colonial project in Palestine and how it has transformed Palestinians' lives. Zureik had argued that Israel was the product of a colonization process and so should be studied through the same concepts and theorization as South Africa, Rhodesia, Australia, and other colonial societies. He also rejected the moral and civilizational superiority of the European settlers. Developing this work, the contributors here argue that colonialism is not only a political-economic system but also a "mode of life" and consciousness, which has far reaching consequences for both the settlers and the indigenous population. Across 15 chapters, the book covers topics such as settler colonialism, dispossession, the separation wall, surveillance technologies, Palestinian education, decolonisation methodologies and popular resistance. Composed of Palestinian scholars and scholars of Palestinian heritage, it is the first book in which the indigenous Palestinians "write back".

“If I must die, let it bring hope, let it be a tale.” This rich, elegiac compilation of work from the late Palestinian poet and professor, Refaat Alareer, brings together his marvelous poetry and deeply human writing about literature, teaching, politics, and family. The renowned poet and literature professor Refaat Alareer was killed by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City alongside his brother, sister, and nephews in December 2023. He was just forty-four years old, but had already established a worldwide reputation that was further enhanced when, in the wake of his death, the poem that gives this book its title became a global sensation. “If I Must Die” is included here, alongside Refaat’s other poetry. Refaat wrote extensively about a range of topics: teaching Shakespeare and the way Shylock could be appreciated by young Palestinian students; the horrors of living under repeated brutal assaults in Gaza, one of which, in 2014, killed another of his brothers; and the generosity of Palestinians to each other, fighting, in the face of it all, to be the one paying at the supermarket checkout. Et must read for alle som vil lære mer om bakgrunnen for strukturene som opprettholder koloniseringen av Palestina. Edward Saids verk Orientalismen var banebrytende da den ble utgitt i 1978, og er fortsatt høyst relevant. Vi anbefaler å lese den sammen med andre og diskutere, eller pare den med en av forelesningsseriene man finner på nett.  Edward Said var en palestinsk-amerikansk litteraturviter, filosof, musikolog og oversetter. Han var professor i litteratur ved universitetet i Columbia fra 1969 til 2003. Said ble født i Jerusalem og vokste opp i Egypt og USA. Said regnes som en avgjørende forløper for postkoloniale studier på basis av sin mest kjente bok Orientalismen (1978, norsk utgave 1994). I boken Orientalismen studerer Said hvordan asiatiske folk under europeisk kolonistyre og kontroll ble omtalt i Vestens kunnskapsproduksjon, altså av de såkalte orientalistene, som var akademiske eksperter på Asias og mer spesifikt Midtøstens kultur og historie. Said hevder at de produserte nedsettende og essensialiserende fremstillinger av østlige folk, språk og kulturer. Typisk beskrev de samfunnene som irrasjonelle, underutviklede og historisk stillestående, hevdet at islam var et dogmatisk trossystem som bidro til despotisme og underkastelse, og skrev dessuten nedsettende om det arabiske språket. Slike «lærde» forestillinger eller eurosentriske konstruksjoner mener Said er blitt spredt i europeiske samfunn, hvor de er blitt til gjengse ideer om Orienten, som han på kritisk vis kaller for orientalisme. Ifølge Said bidrar de til Vestens fortsatte geopolitiske dominans over tidligere kolonisfærer, noe han stiller seg skarpt kritisk til. Said hentet inspirasjon fra blant andre Frantz Fanons psykoanalytiske kolonikritikk, Michel Foucaults maktstudier og Antonio Gramscis marxistiske teori om hegemoni. Said viste hvordan identitetsdannelse er knyttet til kunnskapsproduksjon og geopolitiske maktforhold, noe som siden har stått sentralt i kritiske studier av rase-, opphavs- og identitetsbasert undertrykkelse i det postkoloniale verdenssamfunnet.
